ABSTRACT

Background: The relations between depression and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) have been extensively investigated during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is a lack of understanding on how each component of IU may differentially affect depression symptoms and vice versa. The current study used a network approach to reveal the component-to-symptom interplay between IU and depression and identify intervention targets for depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A total of 624 college students participated in the current study. An IU-Depression network was estimated using items from the 12-item Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. We examined the network structure, node centrality, and node bridge centrality to identify component-to-symptom pathways, central nodes, and bridge nodes within the IU-Depression network. Results: Several distinct pathways (e.g., "Frustration when facing uncertainty" and "Feelings of worthlessness") emerged between IU and Depression. "Fatigue" and "Frustration when facing uncertainty" were identified as the central nodes in the estimated network. "Frustration when facing uncertainty," "Psychomotor agitation/retardation," and "Depressed or sad mood" were identified as bridging nodes between the IU and Depression communities. Conclusion: By delineating specific pathways between IU and depression and highlighting the influential role of "Frustration when facing uncertainty" in maintaining the IU-Depression co-occurrence, current findings may inform targeted prevention and interventions for depression during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), caused by noncardiogenic pulmonary edema (PE), contributes significantly to Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19)-associated morbidity and mortality. We explored the effect of transmembrane osmotic pressure (OP) gradients in PE using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer-based Intermediate filament (IF) tension optical probe. Angiotensin-II- and bradykinin-induced increases in intracellular protein nanoparticle (PN)-OP were associated with inflammasome production and cytoskeletal depolymerization. Intracellular protein nanoparticle production also resulted in cytomembrane hyperpolarization and L-VGCC-induced calcium signals, which differed from diacylglycerol-induced calcium increment via TRPC6 activation. Both pathways involve voltage-dependent cation influx and OP upregulation via SUR1-TRPM4 channels. Meanwhile, intra/extracellular PN-induced OP gradients across membranes upregulated pulmonary endothelial and alveolar barrier permeability. Attenuation of intracellular PN, calcium signals, and cation influx by drug combinations effectively relieved intracellular OP and pulmonary endothelial nonselective permeability, and improved epithelial fluid absorption and PE. Thus, PN-OP is pivotal in pulmonary edema in ARDS and COVID-19, and transmembrane OP recovery could be used to treat pulmonary edema and develop new drug targets in pulmonary injury.

ABSTRACT

Sustainable development (SD) has increasingly played a key background role in government policymaking across the world, especially for the least developed countries in Africa. Therefore, the purpose of our research is to study the SD of African countries in public life, education, and welfare, and then to help policy makers better monitor the status of sustainable development and formulate development policies in these aspects. We firstly propose a new method to assess the SD in public life, education, and welfare. Then we assess the SD status in 51 African countries as well as other countries in the world. After that, we also make a comparison between African countries and the countries in other continents.

ABSTRACT

As a new form of digital assets based on blockchain technology, the cryptocurrency has received increasing attention from researchers and practitioners. However, less attention has been paid to their joint dynamics from the perspective of portfolio management. This paper investigates the dependence dynamics across four major cryptocurrencies and their economic importance in portfolio management using the data from January 2014 to June 2020. Our empirical analysis shows that significant economic gains can be obtained from modelling dynamic asymmetric dependence among cryptocurrencies. We show that our results are robust to the period of the recent market fluctuations caused by COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

In the past several months, the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-associated infection (coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID-19]) developed rapidly and has turned into a global pandemic. Although SARS-CoV-2 mainly attacks respiratory systems, manifestations of multiple organs have been observed. A great concern was raised about whether COVID-19 may affect male reproductive functions. In this study, we collected semen specimens from 12 male COVID-19 patients for virus detection and semen characteristics analysis. No SARS-CoV-2 was found in semen specimens. Eight out of 12 patients had normal semen quality. We also compared the sex-related hormone levels between 119 reproductive-aged men with SARS-CoV-2 infection and 273 age-matched control men. A higher serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and a lower ratio of testosterone (T) to LH were observed in the COVID-19 group. Multiple regression analysis indicated that serum T: LH ratio was negatively associated with white blood cell counts and C-reactive protein levels in COVID-19 patients. It's the first report about semen assessment and sex-hormone evaluation in reproductive-aged male COVID-19 patients. Although further study is needed to clarify the reasons and underlying mechanisms, our study presents an abnormal sex hormone secretion among COVID-19 patients, suggesting that attention should be paid to reproductive function evaluation in the follow-up.

ABSTRACT

Currently the world is being challenged by a public health emergency caused by the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Extensive efforts in testing for coronavirus infection, combined with isolating infected cases and quarantining those in contact, have proven successful in bringing the epidemic under control. Rapid and facile screening of this disease is in high demand. This review summarises recent advances in strategies reported by international researchers and engineers concerning how to tackle COVID-19 via rapid testing, mainly through nucleic acid- and antibody- testing. The roles of biosensors as powerful analytical tools are emphasized for the detection of viral RNAs, surface antigens, whole viral particles, antibodies and other potential biomarkers in human specimen. We critically review in depth newly developed biosensing methods especially for in-field and point-of-care detection of SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, this review describes possible future strategies for virus rapid detection. It helps researchers working on novel sensor technologies to tailor their technologies in a way to address the challenge for effective detection of COVID-19.
